Swing Low, Sweet Recruiters

I was lucky enough to have a ticket to watch England v Wales in the second round of the World Cup on Saturday. Although the result wasn’t exactly desirable (as an England fan), this got me thinking. Maybe England need to approach their next game with the mindset of a recruiter. You can bet we’ll be singing ‘swing low, sweet recruiters‘ during our nail-biting next fixture.

England Vs Wales

The game had the potential to be a cracker and in all fairness it was. The atmosphere was electric and Twickenham felt more like the Colosseum that was about to host a gladiatorial games. The game was played with real intensity and England looked to be on their way to victory until a magnificent (if not a slightly lucky) Welsh try.

As an England fan I was devastated with the result. With Australia, a 2 time tournament winner and England’s next fixture on Saturday, I like many home fans am nervous. Really nervous!

The Skills of a Recruiter

I started to think how England could take the skills of a good recruiter into their next match to ensure they topple the Aussies. They, like a good recruiter, will need to dust themselves down after a bad week and put that behind them. If they wonder of ‘what could have been’ they will go into Saturday’s match full of negativity and as any sales floor will know, negativity breeds negativity.

Prepare and Analyse

England will need to prepare hard and analyse what went wrong. For most of the deal cycle, they did the right thing. They interviewed the candidate, sold their services and manged to secure several interviews with new clients at great rates. All was looking so good and the deal was almost in the bag! Again, any recruiter will know that until the deal is signed, sealed and delivered, it is NOT in! The last step of the process is as important as the first several stages and therefore you can’t take your eye off the ball. You need to keep focused for the full 80 minutes.

Back to Basics

Going into next Saturday’s match, England need to go back to basics. Ensure their call rates are good, they are putting in the hours and start building their pipeline. You make your own luck by working hard to give yourself as much chance as possible. If they do things well and concentrate on their own game, they have every chance of succeeding on Saturday. They cannot afford to think about what their competition is doing. England need to just concentrate on their own game, believe their hard work will pay off and get their month back on track!
