The Moving On Checklist
Switching jobs is a big deal. But, how do you know it’s the right time for a change? This is a huge source of anxiety for a lot of people. Thankfully, we can offer a little help. Our Moving On Checklist is here to help you make the right decision. If you’re ticking any of these boxes, it might be time to start looking for something new.
Your Commission Structure Isn’t Up to Scratch
Realistically, you should be looking to take home about a third of what you bill. This is a pretty standard benchmark for the recruitment industry as a whole. If you’re billing high but seeing little in the way of commission, you’re in the wrong agency.
The Competition Always Wins
Recruitment is unbelievably competitive. This shouldn’t be an issue for most – you win some, you lose some. But, what if you keep losing? What if the agency you work for just hasn’t got the clout, access to resources or reputation to compete in your market? Maybe you’re just flogging a dead horse.
The Culture is Toxic
A toxic work environment can be hugely detrimental to any worker. The problem is, it can often be difficult to remove yourself from a situation and actually acknowledge the effect it’s having on you. A toxic work culture can come in many different shapes and sizes. From misogyny to favouritism, poor morals to vulgar behaviour. A single definition isn’t easy, just take a moment to consider how comfortable you are with the people you work with – this should be a good barometer.
You Feel Inadequate
Ever get the feeling that you’re just a small cog in a machine? If your agency treats you like a number, it’s probably time to look elsewhere. No one should feel inadequate or without respect in their job.
Progression is Non-Existent
In an ideal world, you’ll know exactly what you need to achieve in order to progress in your career. There should always be some form of carrot dangling to motivate you to get out of bed in the morning. No one should work in an agency without progression opportunities.
You Struggle to Connect
This is actually surprisingly common but often overlooked by consultants. All agencies are different. You may be working in an agency/sector which doesn’t fall in line with your own skills or personality traits. When we work with candidates, we always look to place them in an agency where they would thrive both personally and professionally. Don’t underestimate how important this is for your job satisfaction.
You Work in a Hire/Fire Agency
There are plenty of hire/fire agencies out there. The pressure helps some to thrive but it can also make recruiters feel anxious about the future. Everyone has a dry month from time to time. The fear of being let go can make your success even more difficult.
There’s No Work/Life Balance
If you’re working all hours under the sun but don’t enjoy the famed social life we’re all proud of, it may be time to rethink your position. Recruiters need a bit of downtime to get over the pressure and intensity of the job. A work/life balance is absolutely essential for a happy career.
You’re Getting Bored
There’s a number of reasons why you could be bored in a job. Maybe it’s not challenging enough, maybe you’re working in a sector which is uninteresting. Realistically though, recruitment isn’t a job which should allow you the time to feel bored. If you do, there’s something wrong.
You Hate Your Boss
Contrary to popular opinion, you shouldn’t hate your boss. The employer/employee relationship doesn’t have to always run smoothly but it does need to be functional. Realistically, if a boss is getting in the way of your own happiness at work, it might be worth looking elsewhere.
Not Enough Autonomy
A great upside of recruitment is the autonomy which comes with it. The independence and freedom to succeed on your own is inspiring. Though, do you actually have the amount of autonomy you’d like? Are you being held back by the shackles of the business?
You’ve Been There Too Long
Are you at risk of stagnating? If you stay at the same agency for too long, you could risk going stale. Heading to a new agency will give you the boost needed to compete with the best again.
This might just be the most important point on the whole list. Are you miserable in your job? It might be a culmination of small issues or the symptom of a larger issue. Either way, unhappiness at work can take a serious toll on your whole life.
